A lot going on this week but it will soon get quiet around here.
The week started with a trip by a group of students and faculty to Sonoita, the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, to watch the racing operations. The Derby is a big event in Sonoita as it is elsewhere across the country.
The faculty and students were observing the operation at the Santa Cruz Fairgrounds to explore the possibilitiy of working with the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds and Rodeo Association (SCCFRA) in the future, utilizing the racing operation as a potential lab and student teaching operation.
The weekend was a great learning experience for the students, but also a fun two days. I look forward to discussions in the near future with the faculty and the SCCFRA management to see what we might do together in the future.
We all took lots of notes about how everything from parking and admissions to regulation of the events were operated. The SCCFRA did a wonderful job and the students were impressed. They also had the opportunity to be mystery shoppers and provide input on all aspects of operating a race meet.
The students that helped us with the Sonoita project not only had a long weekend but they had finals to content with too. This week students are taking finals and preparing for their summer break.
It was not all work though. Each year the faculty hosts end of the semester parties around finals week. This year June and Steve Barham were the hosts of the fun evening Monday night. We are all glad to see what is a long semester come to an end. Monday we took time to say goodby to our graduates and two exchange students from Ireland.
Next on everyone's agenda is job hunting, summer internships and jobs and just taking a break from semester projects, studies and tests.
