The Return of Students!

August 17, 2012

Well I am back from a cool experience in Alaska and Seattle.  Anywhere cool in the summer is a good place to be rather than Tucson.

The family went on a seven night cruise to Alaska with stops in Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria.  We also spent a few days in Seattle.

Vacation Time!

August, 2, 2012

I am posting early this week since I am looking forward to leaving tomorrow for a little vacation!  I will report more on that excursion when I return.

Return from Istanbul and ARC Wrap Up

July 27, 2012

Well I am back in Tucson and rested up from the long journey.  I was up for 27+ hours Monday coming back from Istanbul.  Since it was a 1 pm flight I was not able to sleep.  Getting through customs in L.A. was about as bad as I have seen it.  I had a long layover but not much time to rest there either.

Tuesday I just took the day off and slept in for a long time.

Istanbul - Asian Racing Conference

July 20, 2012

It's very late here in Istanbul as the closing ceremonies tonight conclude the 34th Asian Racing Conference (ARC.)   I will provide some brief comments this week but a fuller report next week when I return and maybe get some rest.

The conference is a grueling four days but a great opportunity to learn what is going on elsewhere. It is also enlightening to learn what other racing executive's thoughts are on racing in the US.

Leaving the Country

July 13, 2012

The July 4 holiday made for a slow week around campus so I waited a week to post something.  We continue to work on Symposium topics.  If anyone has an idea please let me know.

We should be announcing another topic/speaker next week so look for the press release. We are doing a number of things over the summer that we hope will enhance the Symposium experience for our guests.  Look for more announcements forthcoming.

Trip to Iowa

June 30, 2012

A number of things that happen in the slower summer hours at the RTIP are actually important to successful opportunities in the future.

It was a busy week working with a few students on their capstone project, checking in on interns, attending a national industry meeting, preparing topics for our Symposium and the extra benefit of seeing some great racing and a top three year old, Hansen, live at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino.

More of the Same?

June 22, 2012

This week might not be too exciting to report about so I may have to add some news from the RTIP family.

We are working on a new database for the RTIP but the nicest feature will be the ability for our Symposium attendees to register for the conference online.   We meet with the University of Arizona Foundation to work on details to manage a safe and secure way to deposit funds from the online registrants to our accounts at the Foundation.

Highs and Lows

June 15, 2012

Well today I might have experienced some highs and lows of our industry.

Busy Week and Belmont Uncertainty

 June 8, 2012

As I write this, like many of us in racing, I am waiting the news rumored about the Belmont and whether I'll Have Another will run?

Even though I don't teach formal classes in the summer it does stay quite busy.   Many industry folks ask me what I do in the summer and assume it is easy street.   Well this week I had a pretty full schedule and did not get done all that I would have liked.

June Arrived With a Record

June 1, 2012

Not the kind of record I would like to report on but it is 107 degrees today setting a record here in Tucson for heat this day.   That is just one reason I am glad I don't teach a summer course.
