Welcome

Welcome to Chalk Players: A weekly teacher's view of the racing world (actually we don't play with chalk anymore, but use white boards...and I prefer longshots too!)

As director of the UA Race Track Industry Program, it is always interesting to interact with students pursuing a career in racing and keep up on the news in the industry.

Busy Week and Belmont Uncertainty

 June 8, 2012

As I write this, like many of us in racing, I am waiting the news rumored about the Belmont and whether I'll Have Another will run?

Even though I don't teach formal classes in the summer it does stay quite busy.   Many industry folks ask me what I do in the summer and assume it is easy street.   Well this week I had a pretty full schedule and did not get done all that I would have liked.

June Arrived With a Record

June 1, 2012

Not the kind of record I would like to report on but it is 107 degrees today setting a record here in Tucson for heat this day.   That is just one reason I am glad I don't teach a summer course.

Summer Begins in Tucson

May 25, 2012

It reached about 105 degrees this week so I know summer is officially here in Tucson.  Good news is that it will be in the high 80's for the holiday weekend on Saturday and Sunday.   I shall enjoy what might be the last break in temperature for the summer.

Graduation

May 18, 2012

I think everyone is happy this week! Spring semester is always a long one with lots of projects that students must complete and faculty must grade. We all need a break from one another and that time has arrived.

Saturday May 12 was graduation ceremonies for the University and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The RTIP grads celebrate and begin their new journey.

Busy End to the Spring Semester!

May 11, 2012

A lot going on this week but it will soon get quiet around here.

The week started with a trip by a group of students and faculty to Sonoita, the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, to watch the racing operations. The Derby is a big event in Sonoita as it is elsewhere across the country.

Down the Stretch of Another Semester

May 4, 2012

It is a busy time here at the RTIP! Without a doubt, this week and the past one or two are the busiest times of the year, along with the few weeks leading up to our annual Symposium in December.

This week is the end of classes for the spring semester and the beginning of finals week.
