Tucson, AZ — Executive Vice President and CEO of the United States Trotting Association (USTA), Mike Tanner, addressed students in the Joe Hirsch Speaker Forum as well as students enrolled in Racing Organizational Structure & Management class.
“Being invited to talk in the Joe Hirsch Forum was the highlight of my month,” said Tanner. “What he (Hirsch) meant to the game is unparalleled.”
Tanner gave students an intimate look at the USTA’s role in harness racing in the United States and the challenges that come with working for a national organization. Placing students in the driver’s seat, Tanner challenged them to come up with solutions to common, as well as the not-so-common, scenarios that racing executives face.
His advice to the students - “Know the game at a basic level, and don’t ever forget how you get there,” he explained. “Say yes to opportunities. Build a network and find a mentor; then be one.
